Reliant Bobbin’! (Friday May 19th 1995)

Making a big splash on the canal - a car that thinks its a boat

Reliant bobbin’! Just cruisin’ along as 3-wheel Robin takes to the water in style It may not be red but the Robin went bob, bob, bobbin’ along during an usual event in Coventry Canal, Kettlebrook, at the weekend. The 3-wheeled marvel from Tamworth’s Reliant company was part of a weekend treat for the Robineers -25 youngsters from around the area who are disabled or disadvantaged. The car has been specially adapted with an outboard motor by Jim Walker from Chesterfield Canal Preservadon Society which uses the Robin to raise funds for that part of the canal network.

Tamworth Cruising Club provided 28 boats for the event which was organised by Coleshilt Rotary Club.  Apart from the boats and car, a pedaloe relay crew took part by pedalling from Tamworth to Lichfield for charity. Robin Run 1995 was launched by Tamworth Mayor Coun Mrs Mary Lewis, who also presented a Rotary Club cheque for £500 to the  Five Counties Air Ambulance. The day trip ended in Lichfield where chairman of the city’s district council, Coun Mrs Erica Baytlss, met the convoy and presented the children with a gift pack and certificates.

Publicity officer for .Coleshill Rotary Club, Tony Potter, said: “We would like to thank Tamworth Cruising Club for their help. In the end we had more boats than children. “We did not expect such a large turn-out. We all had a brilliant day and are hoping to make it an annual event.”
